Are You Hitting Your Protein Goals?

I was chatting with a client recently - a busy mum in her mid-40s who’d been thinking about eating more plant-based. ‘I just feel better when I eat less meat,’ she told me, ‘but I’m worried I won’t get enough protein.  I’ve been told it’s important but I’m really struggling with my weight & I’m so tired all the time.  I don’t know if it’s a good change for me.’

Sound familiar?

The truth is, she’s not the only one.  I’ve similar conversations with many of my clients - they’re trying to eat more intuitively, more plant-based, more ‘clean’ - but somewhere along the line, they stop feeling strong.  Their clothes start to feel tight, they start seeing this stubborn belly fat and they’ve no idea why.

No one told them protein needs go up in midlife, especially when hormones start changing, we start to lose muscle and cravings seem to hit harder than ever.

So I took a closer look at her day. She was skipping breakfast, snacking on crackers and fruit, having a veggie soup for lunch, and a stir fry for dinner. It looked healthy, but when I added it up, she was getting under 50g of protein a day. No wonder she was tired and hungry by 3pm!

So we made some small changes - ones that actually fit her life.

She needed to have something really small for breakfast, and I recommended 1/2 banana or Graze boxes which worked really well for her.  You could try a few teaspoons of yoghurt or dried fruit instead.  I added more protein to her lunch and gave her  few really good snack ideas for mid-afternoon.

Her energy picked up, her cravings calmed and she started to feel more like herself again.

This is what I want you to know: you don’t need to eat meat at every meal. You can eat plant-based and still get results in midlife - you just need to be intentional about it.

And if you’ve been relying on willpower, skipping meals, or choosing the same 3 ‘healthy’ things over and over… you don’t have to keep doing it that way.
