Mediterranean Diet V’s Low FODMAP
A recent pilot study suggests that the Mediterranean diet may help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Participants were randomly assigned to follow either the Mediterranean diet or the low FODMAP diet, a commonly recommended but restrictive approach for managing IBS. After four weeks, 73% of participants in the Mediterranean diet group met the primary endpoint for symptom improvement, compared to 81.8% in the low FODMAP group. IBS affects an estimated 4–11% of the population, and many patients prefer dietary strategies over medication. Although the low FODMAP diet is effective for many, it is known for being restrictive and difficult to sustain.
